Review: Cerebellum/Standard Deviants

I have to admit that I never took any sort of AP Exam and if they were offered, I certainly wasn’t aware of them. (There’s your free glimpse into the inner workings of my “genius” mind, folks! Does it concern you that I homeschool my kids?—Wink-wink!)

Of course, now that I’m much older and wiser (no comment from the peanut gallery), I’m quite keen on the use of AP exams, even if my children have no real desire to attend college as yet. (Because let’s face it—acing one of these babies makes for some serious parental bragging rights! -- Oops! Did I say that?)

Enter this latest review product from Cerebellum/Standard Deviants. It’s from their Light Speed Video Series titled: Writing—AP English Language & Comp. Exam Prep. Cerebellum

This 2-disc DVD set provides a solid review of the exam material. Their “30 in 30” is a fast-paced tutorial comprised of the 30 most essential AP English topics. The video provides important test taking strategies (which is great for you nervous types) and the Digital Workbook which includes more than 15 pages of worksheets, quizzes and handouts completes this program.

Our Thoughts:

I had Sierra use this program as part of her “regular” school work. At first I was worried that it would be “too” fast-paced for her as we’ve never discussed anything remotely “AP” yet. But she totally surprised me by saying it felt “too slow” for her. (Crazy girl say wha---?) Apparently she felt that the actors went over the material a bit too much at times. (Blink…blink) However, I’m still stunned by her revelation I personally didn’t see it that way. At all. (Perhaps there’s an AP exam in her future, yes?)

I personally liked the “short response” tutorial because-- as you can plainly see--I’m a woman who is quite verbose and couldn’t give a short response to save my life!  At times I felt the actors were a bit too silly for my taste, but they did keep things moving and interesting.

Final Analysis:

Light Speed Writing: AP English Language & Comp. Exam Prep is priced at $14.98—but it’s currently on sale for just $11.74. This is an amazing price considering the effectiveness of the material material. And because this is a digital product, it eliminates all those hand-cramps associated with traditional exam prep workbooks. ;) Still not convinced? Check out the video below.

Overall, I’d say that both Sierra and were pleased with this product. Even if she did find it a bit slow sometimes. (Ahem) I would recommend this product over traditional workbooks any day of the week. Even if your children aren’t necessarily college bound, there is still quite a bit to be gleaned from this product. Two thumbs up!
