Review: Master Innovations – Master Ruler

About a month ago, my two younger children began learning about measurement. At first they enjoyed using rulers and measuring tapes for their assignments, but the joy was very short-lived. Abby found no value in it, whatsoever. {Unless she’s measuring to see who’s getting the bigger piece of cake or something.} Ethan on the other hand, loves building things and doing various other “Man Projects” around the house, so he was all for it. But then it became just another assignment and the “fun” came to a screeching halt.

Shortly thereafter, we received our latest review product…The Master Ruler by Master Innovations.

What Is It?

Simply put, it’s a ruler with a really cool twist. {Read: This ain’t your Mama’s ruler!}

The Standard Ruler has 5 spiral-bound, flippable plastic overlays marked out in various increments {1/16 through 1/2 inch}. The Metric Ruler has 3 overlays {millimeter, centimeter, decimeter}. These overlays allow students to master one unit of measurement at a time, without getting confused. {Check out the video clip below.}

Pretty snazzy, huh? ;-)

This nifty little gadget really impressed my children and I was amazed to see them {finally!} grasping fractions, something I’ve been having to take v-e-r-y slowly with them until now. Woohoo!

The Master Ruler Starter Kit contains:

  • 1 Standard Master Ruler
  • 1 Metric Master Ruler
  • 1 Teacher’s Model Master Ruler {which is clear and can be used with an overhead projector, should you happen to have one handy}
  • 1 Reproducible Practice Workbook

We also received the colorful Marvels of Measurement Poster which “helps students make the “length-capacity-weight” connection in the standard unit of measure.” We found this fun to look at and refer to, but didn’t go so far as to actually hang it up. {Not that it isn’t worthy of a few pushpins; I just don’t have the wall space at the moment.}

The Master Ruler Starter kit is available for $41.25 and the “Marvels of Measurement Poster” is available for $10. To purchase either of these fun products, please click here.

Thank you, Master Innovations! Your products are {and I’m quoting my youngest here} “Awesome!”
