Review: Wits & Wagers Family {North Star Games}

If you ask my kids if they want to play a board game, 9 times out of 10 their answer will be “No!” As my oldest often says, “There’s a reason why they call them “bored” games!”

Well, they were all singing a completely different tune over this next review product, courtesy of North Star Games.

WitsWagersFamilyWits & Wagers Family is an fantastically-fun game that involves trivia skills (the “wits”) with a splash of good-natured gambling (the “wager” you place on the answers).

Designed for families or groups with 3-10 people, ages 8 and up (younger children might be able to handle some of the questions, too), Wits & Wagers Family is the cure for rainy day boredom! {Those of you living in Washington State, know exactly what I’m talking about!}

To play: Each player selects their own dry erase game board and color-coordinated “meeples”  {chunky little star-shaped dudes} to use as their wagers. The designated “reader” then reads a question off the trivia card.

All the players then write down their answers on their game boards. The answers will always be a number—any number you can possibly think of.

The guesses are then lined up, smallest to largest, on the table so that everyone can see them. Players then place their 2 “meeples” on the number cards they think are right. They don’t necessarily have to be their own. That’s part of the fun! {Note: To win, your guess or “wager” has to be closest to the correct answer without going over. Think: “Price is Right”.}

Once the trivia card’s flipped over and the answer is read, the players then add up their points—anywhere from a big fat “zero” to 4. The player who racks up 15 points first, wins. Smile

What I really liked about this game is the fact that the questions are challenging enough for adults without being totally over children’s heads. There are plenty of Disney and Nickelodeon questions as well as TV Show, music and current events questions…you name it! I also appreciated the unique dry-erase boards and markers. No need to worry about digging out scratch paper after several rounds of game-play! Hooray!

{PS: In the end, every single one of my kids was happy with Wits & Wagers Family and asked to play it later when Daddy came home. SmileAnd I’m pleased to report that during our test run of the game, each of us won a round, including moi! Ha ha!}

Wits & Wagers Family would make a terrific addition to your board game repertoire and is available through North Star Games for $19.99.
