Review: Virtual Nerd

When I first heard the name Virtual Nerd, I assumed someone was poking fun at my kids--who are, in fact, virtual nerds. They're all about technology, from their video games to their cell phones to their iTouches.

But lo and behold, Virtual Nerd isn't about potentially mind-numbing activities {imagine that!} but rather a video tutorial website dedicated to breaking down math and science's most complex processes with ease.

Virtual Nerd currently provides students with access to hundreds of interactive video tutorials in:
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra 1
  • Algebra 2
  • Intro to Physics
  • Plans are underway to add Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Physics with Trigonometry and Chemistry in the coming year.
{You know. All the subjects that leave the majority of us scratching our heads in confusion and rekindling our vows to loathe all things math for the rest of our lives. *Ahem*}

Now the beauty behind Virtual Nerd is that, unlike with most video tutorials that assume you already have some basic knowledge under your belt, you can "drill down" (their term) to the root of the process if you still have questions. This makes it a whole lot easier for folks like us/me, which in turn provides an incredible feeling of accomplishment when you're finished. {Not an exaggeration. I really did feel more confident about tackling Algebra with my oldest, whereas before I would've said something like, "I don't care if she EVER learns this stuff..."}

Not that I plan on competing in a math competition anytime soon, but still. The confidence boost was pretty exciting. :)

Another great thing about Virtual Nerd is that it offers both male and female instructors, which keeps things fresh for viewers.

Virtual Nerd offers a variety of Price Plans to meet your needs:

  • 2 hr Trial = Free {one time use}
  • 1 Day = $5 {one time}
  • 1 Week = $19 {one time}
  • Monthly = $49
  • 3 Months = $129
Overall, I would have to say we really enjoyed our time with this product. Math still isn't on our Top Ten Things To Do list, but we enjoyed the tutorials {the instructors are articulate and easy to follow}, and we were thrilled with the ability to drill down into a topic's foundational concepts before trying our hand at more complex problems.

I would encourage other homeschoolers -- and really, anyone who struggles with math -- to give Virtual Nerd a try. I hereby award this product two thumbs up!
