VocabAhead is an SAT vocabulary prep book filled with cartoon illustrations and simple definitions to increase student’s vocabulary skills in a minimal amount of time.
The book provides a series of 10 words (one word per page) and their corresponding illustrations. Each word also contains:
- the part of speech
- list of antonyms
- list of synonyms
Following each group of 10 words is a short quiz featuring a word-to-definition match up and fill-in-the-blank sentences.
Although the words themselves are benign, I did have a small problem with some of the illustrations. For example, under the word “congenial” the example reads:
“The two college freshmen soon established a congenial friendship after learning that they had much in common.
With the same tastes in music, movies, and sports, it was easy for the two young men to create a friendly and amiable rapport. Even they were surprised at how congenial they were.”
Sounds okay, right? Well from there it depicts two young men smiling broadly with one arm slung over the other’s shoulders, and a bottle in their other hand. Now I can’t say for sure if that’s supposed to be a beer bottle or not, but with the whole “college freshmen” phrase staring back at me…one’s got to wonder. :o/
Sure, I get that this is a high school/college level product and drinking is a common college practice. HOWEVER. Either write something like “soda” on the label or don’t use that as your illustration. There are a million other ways to illustrate the word “congenial”. Okay, I’m done.
Moving on! :)
The format behind VocabAhead is extremely simple to use. I would assign 10 words plus the corresponding quiz each day to Sierra, which she had no trouble completing. In addition to the book activities, “the purchase of the book entitles you to free downloads of Vocabulary Videos and MP3’s for the SAT level words covered in this book.” ~ Quote: VocabAhead. The direct URL is provided on page one of the workbook. Again, easy and simple to use.
