Fit Mommy Announcement

Unfortunately, no it's not about the Challenge. Sorry about that! :-)

Instead, this announcement is all about changes; changes that I've been going through recently now that I'm working full time outside the home (in addition to full time within the home) and the changes that have transpired as a result.

Long story short, I have decided to turn Fit Mommy Friday over to the meme's co-creator and my dearest "partner in crime" Mrs. Sharon White. Sharon has graciously stepped in to cover the meme each week, and has a fantastic idea to turn it into something even bigger and better than it was before! :-)

Check out her post detailing the changes here.

While I realize this may be a surprise to some, I cannot in good faith keep this meme going. Not only am I not living up to my own fitness goals anymore due to my crazy schedule, but said schedule makes it very difficult to write the meme each week. This simply isn't fair to all of you, so I decided it was time to pass the torch along, so to speak.

I have LOVED reading all of your posts over these past two years and will miss "seeing" you all each week. You have no idea how encouraging you all have been to me and I cannot possibly thank you enough.

I hope you will all join Mrs. White each week for the Vintage Healthy Home; from my understanding there will be an option to participate as a family or as individuals so you can still keep up with your Fit Mommy goals. There will also be challenges, contests and prizes including a $10 Amazon gift card giveaway to kick off the new meme this week!

Again, I want to thank you all for being a part of the Fit Mommy team. I've said it before and I'll say it one last time...you ladies are the GREATEST!!!!

Fit Mommy Friday

*The purpose behind Fit Mommy Friday is to encourage mothers in their quest toward healthy living. Whether your goal is to lose weight or simply eat healthier, Fit Mommy Friday is about sharing our weekly successes, struggles, and goals for improvement.*

I might as well cut 'n paste last week's check in. It'd be easier than re-typing it all out. :)

No workouts. Just walking to get to/from this bus to that bus. This week however, I plan to change that up a little bit and walk around during my lunch break. It's better than nothing, right? Even though the weather has been less than hospitable, I can't go another week just sitting, sitting, sitting at my desk at work, the break room, my kitchen table (aka office) at home, or on the bus. I just cannot let that continue.

I can already feel myself getting "soft" in areas that were rock hard before. (Sigh) That's such a bummer! :( I'm hoping to get in a workout each day on Saturday and Sunday as those are my two days off from zulily. (Of course, if I get called in to the hospital I won't be able to workout, either.)

In regard to nutritional goals, I've been taking protein bars with me to work to eat at lunch, and have been taking a multivitamin in the mornings. It's interesting to note how slightly more energetic I feel when I remember to take my vitamin vs. those days when I don't. :)

I've also made a commitment to get 5 hrs of sleep a night. Yes, I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but I was down to 4 hrs last week and it about did me in. I was staying up until 11:30pm working on my home based job assignments, going to bed, then waking up at 3:30am to get ready for work. Insanity. I kept falling asleep on my way to/from work! (LOL) That and I was just absolutely miserable. So now I work until 10pm and wake up at 3:30am, giving me 5 - 5.5 hrs. (Depending when I finally nod off.)

How was your week?

Fit Mommy Friday

*The purpose behind Fit Mommy Friday is to encourage mothers in their quest toward healthy living. Whether your goal is to lose weight or simply eat healthier, Fit Mommy Friday is about sharing our weekly successes, struggles, and goals for improvement.*

Well...(sheepish grins) here's to yet another week of me...failing. Big time!

Exercise this week--outside of walking? None.
Healthy eating? Uhh...do the 2 PowerBars a day for snack and lunch count?

This is me working full-time outside the house. It's not pretty.

I thought I was crazy-busy before?! Ha! That was a cake walk compared to the way things are now. Total cake walk.

Now I wake up at 5am (soon to be 3:45am once my new schedule goes into effect next week) and race to get a few work-related tasks done via computer (work related in this case refers to those jobs which I do from home), then race out the door to catch the bus downtown. After work I either head home OR I head back up to PNB to meet Abby after ballet and take her home--OR--as will be the case tonight--I'll head over to PNB to review a performance. (BTW I'm really looking forward to this evening's opening of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"!)

Once I get home, it's back to work on the computer until it's time to go to bed. Such an exciting life, wouldn't you say? (Hee hee)

I must say, I totally commend all the working mommies out there who do this every.single.day. Hats off to you, ladies! You're amazing...

Well, since my check-in pretty much stinks, I shall now turn the floor over to the rest of you. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's progress--perhaps it'll motivate me to get my rear in gear! ;-)

Goooooooooood morning, Fit Mommies! How was your week? Mine was only a slight improvement over last week's major "bomb". I managed to squeeze in a few minutes of exercise here 'n there (more so than before), but still--no solid "workout".

That really bugs me.

Nutritionally, I've been doing "okay". Not great. I must confess that my mom did treat me to Taco Time and a slice of German chocolate cake for my birthday, which I know I'll regret later on the scale. But at the time? Ahh...heaven! :)

What's really been bad though is my stress level. That's been through the roof! I've only felt extremely panicky a handful of times in my life, and I added another one to the list on Monday.

That's when I received a call for a job interview.

I know that sounds kind of crazy, but when I got the text from Dean telling me that the manager from Zulily.com had called (I was at ballet with Abby), I felt this strange, overwhelming urge to freak.out.big.time. All these thoughts about how I was going to coordinate everything should I get the job began swirling around my head and...well...you get the idea.

I felt a million times better the following day and since the interview (which went really well, in my opinion) but my reaction certainly gave me pause. Crazy, huh?
Oh and here's another little update: Dean has a job interview this afternoon! Hooray! (Funny how I had to go through one first before he even got a call for one...)

So anyway, that's my week for you. Anything new and exciting happening on your end?

Fit Mommy Friday

*The purpose behind Fit Mommy Friday is to encourage mothers in their quest toward healthy living. Whether your goal is to lose weight or simply eat healthier, Fit Mommy Friday is about sharing our weekly successes, struggles, and goals for improvement.*

First of all, I need to toot my own horn just a bit (toot-toot!) for staying out of the chocolate zone known as my kitchen for the majority of the time. I did snarf down a cupcake during Abby's party, along with 1 lowly peanut butter ball. {Which were de-freaking-licious, by the way. Hee hee}

However, I have not had a really decent workout all week. No real excuse, other than the fact that I have this weird phobia about working out when my husband's home. And since he's lost his job, he's been home...well, all week. I have squeezed in a few exercises here 'n there (squats, push-ups, crunches) but I haven't had a real "pull the weights out and fire up the DVD player" type workout that I love--and dearly miss.

I know I technically can workout when he's home--I just can't bring myself to do so. {Yes, I know that makes me strange.}

So that's been my week..."uneventful" is the word I'd use to describe it best.

In other news (as you've already noted), hubby still hasn't found a job. I however, have received a couple of responses to my resume. {Imagine that.} Not sure what will come of the jobs yet. I haven't been officially offered a job, just interviewed over the phone and discussed hours of availability. But in any event, it seems as though hubby and I may end up switching roles here really soon. Prayers are appreciated.

How was your week? Has Spring finally "sprung" in your area? Are you able to get out and enjoy the sunshine? Here in Washington state, we had exactly 1 nice day this week. ONE! (LOL) But now we're back to normal--cloudy, rainy and cold. {Shrugs} Gotta love it! :o)

This week I've been much better about not turning to food as a source of comfort during times of stress. {Yay me!} And with the help of a pair of new (to me) workout videos, I've been giving myself a nice break from the stress. At least for an hour or so, which is better than nothing. :o)

Junk food's been non-existent {double yay me!}, although that'll probably be shot to the four winds this weekend as it's Abby's 11th birthday on Saturday, followed by her party on Sunday. My mom and Sierra whipped up a HUGE batch of my mother's famous peanut butter balls {chocolaty dipped, peanut buttery goodness that tastes far better than a Reese's...no joke!} for the party, and of course there's going to be plenty of cake/cupcakes as well. {Shakes fist at the sky: "Blast you, vile chocolate and your irresistibleness!"}Therefore, next week's check in will not be anywhere near as awesome as this one. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Moving on!

I'd like to take a moment and thank you all for your sweet words of encouragement and prayers. My hubby's still looking for a full time job, but--Praise God!--he was able to secure a couple of computer repair jobs to keep us afloat through the remainder of the month. Woohoo!

The one networking job is for an office building in downtown Seattle, which I later learned was none other than Zulily.com. Ever hear of it? It's an awesome children's clothing deal site for moms. {Seriously, the deals are amazing. Check 'em out if you haven't already done so!}

This was so cool because:
1) I obviously know about and love Zulily,
2) they're located in Seattle and I hadn't noticed that before (duh), and
3) the guy he's working for is super-cool as is the company. Dean said it looked as though everyone was having a blast just being there. {Which is really saying something for a work environment, ya know?} Anyway, I just wanted to share that.

Well, that's about it for me this week. Like I said, next week's check will not be as cool with all the chocolate staring me down. But I am confident I shall not overindulge. Enjoy, yes. But not to excess. ;-)

How was your week?????

Fit Mommy Friday

*The purpose behind Fit Mommy Friday is to encourage mothers in their quest toward healthy living. Whether your goal is to lose weight or simply eat healthier, Fit Mommy Friday is about sharing our weekly successes, struggles, and goals for improvement.*

Check it out, ladies! I'm actually getting this post up before Friday morning! Woohoo! :o) Aren't you impressed? {I sure am!}

This week has been a bit difficult for me to get my workouts in. As most of you already know, I don't like to workout in front of people--especially not my husband. Even though he sleeps in, he'll still hear me jumping, huffing and puffing in the other room and come out to see what's going on! (Yikes) So anyway, he's been home since Monday afternoon because (sigh)....he lost his job. :o(

Although he's been submitting his resume into every company he can think of, he hasn't received any offers as yet. But we're praying and hoping that this changes really soon!  If you wouldn't mind praying for this situation, I'd be ever so grateful.

Anyway, because of this I really don't have much to report this week. I haven't worked out since Monday (which was 50 mins), and I binged on chocolate ice cream on Tuesday. Or was it Wednesday? Hmm. I can't remember exactly, but it was simply because I let the stress of all this get to me. Thankfully it was only that one time and truthfully speaking, my bowl of ice cream wasn't all that large. It just felt large because I don't normally eat ice cream and I'm lactose intolerant. :o)  {I'm definitely not the brightest bulb in the box, that's for sure!}

So that's pretty much my week! It's not the best, I know. But I promise to do my best to improve before next week's check in.

How has your week been? Try any new (good) workout routines?
PS: Does anyone here watch "Biggest Loser"? What do you think of the two new trainers??? Just curious.

Clearly I'm not as on top of things as I should be, as evidenced by the fact that I didn't get this out until just now as opposed to last night before bed. Sorry! :-(

My check-in for the week is nearly identical to last week's. I'm still using the new Tracie Long Fitness workout {which I absolutely adore!} and find myself performing a few of the video's exercises when I have a moment of free {read: uninterrupted} time--like when putting away laundry or whilst cleaning the bathroom. {I have a small bathroom, so that basically limits me to squats and lunges! Hee hee}

I haven't had any junk food, unless you count the massive amount of peppermints {Altoids and off-brand Lifesavers} I've consumed this week. You see, I have an addiction to these as well as chai, and I can go through a whole roll of the cheapies in a matter of minutes! Kinda odd, I know. But they're so yummy!

My weight's stayed the same {drat!} but I suppose that's okay. I have noticed a few changes in the muscle tone and definition in my thighs {Yippee!!} that I attribute to those wicked dead-lifts and 4-part lunge combination I was telling you about previously. {Wink-wink} That always makes me feel good! {The definition...not the lunges!}

Now if I could just get my stomach, hips and rear-end to cooperate, I can die a happy woman. Ha!

Before I close, I'd like to take a moment to provoke a bit of sympathy from ya'll. You see, I'm going in today at noon for my very first {and hopefully my last!} root canal. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about the pain involved and quite honestly...? I'm starting to panic. Sure, I've given birth three times {twice w/o any pain meds, thankyouverymuch} so I'm sure I can handle getting my tooth drilled and gutted. Or not. {Ahem}

Plus, I have to be done with this silly appointment in exactly 90 minutes, as I have to get Abby down to ballet class by 3:45pm.

I'm also supposed to be attending some sort of "parent mixer/get-to-know-each-other" party after the class, too. But given the root canal horror stories, I'm probably not going to be feeling all that social tonight.

Okay, I'm done whining. For now. You may see more whining from this blog later this afternoon. :o)

In the meantime, I can't wait to hear about your week! That at least will make me happy! :)

Happy {late Thursday night} Friday, everyone! How’s your week been? As you can see, I’ve finally got my act together and I’m getting this post up before I go to bed so it’s up ‘n ready for YOU on Friday morning. {Aren’t I nice??}

Before I share about my week, I wanted to thank you all for your comments and prize suggestions for the next Challenge. {I will definitely try to find some sort of “healthy” chocolate this time! Winking smile } I’m slowly getting companies on board and will announce the Spring Challenge as soon as everything’s finalized.

Soooo!!! My week’s been pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Winking smile I received my new Tracie Long Fitness workout video {Leaning Out} in the mail shortly after last week’s post, which—I’ve gotta tell ya—is nothing short of phenomenal! Seriously that workout is *amazing*! It’s filled with your standard “Firm” moves with weights and cardio intervals—but with heavy emphasis on the core and even more challenging hip, thigh and tush exercises like dead-lifts and this incredible 4-part lunge sequence that leaves your thighs *begging for mercy*. {LOL} It’s like The Firm, only multiplied by like a hundred!

Anyway, I was feeling sore shortly after I did it the first time through (Monday), so I knew it was hitting all the right spots. Smile I completed it again Tuesday and Wednesday, took Thursday off, and will do it again tomorrow morning (Friday) because I miss it already!

Oh so back to that 4-part lunge sequence…here it is, in case you’re interested!

Standing on your left leg—medium to heavy weights {5-10 lbs} on shoulders—lunge forward with your right leg. Bring the leg back, then do a side lunge (again with the right leg).

Bring your foot back to center. Switch feet.

Now lunge backwards with your left leg, so your weight is now completely over your right leg. Bring your foot back. Now do a one-legged squat with your weight still over your right leg while pressing through the ball of your left foot. Perform this series 5 times through on the right leg.

Then do 5 reps of 3-count elevator squats {slowly descend for 3 counts, then slowly rise up for 3 counts} before starting all over again on the left leg. Then repeat!! {Note: If you watch the squat tutorial video, the version performed in the video can be seen at approx. 1 minute, 48 seconds}

Talk about your thigh busters, huh? Winking smile

Okay, back to my check in. I’ve been eating lots of veggie sandwiches this week, continuing to drink copious amounts of water, dining on no junky food, popping my vitamins, and feeling fabulous! Woohoo! {Snoopy dance…}

I now turn the floor over to you, my fellow amazing Fit Mommies! How was your week?

Fit Mommy Friday

UPDATE: Linky should now be fixed. Please let me know if you experience further difficulties. :)*

Before I begin, I want to mention that today's Linky will look a bit different for the time being. This is due to the fact that even though I've renewed my membership, it isn't reflecting yet on the Mr. Linky website. So until it does, I have to use the "free" version ...which doesn't look half as cool as the other one. :) Moving on!

So this week went swimmingly compared to the previous. Woohoo! I've managed to squeeze in 4 workouts this week, alternating between Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred (20 mins) and various FIRM tapes (45-60 mins). I also did a lot of walking around Seattle last weekend with my family. We explored the Seattle Center grounds, visited the Experience Music Project, and walked to/from different restaurants/stores nearby. {Note to self: need...new...sneakers!}

Speaking of Valentine's day, Dean said I could order a new fitness video as a special treat. So I did! I ordered a workout DVD from Tracie Long Fitness, one of our first Fit Mommy Challenge sponsors. {She's a-maaaazing!!!} I'm so excited to get this new little "treat" in my hands! {Hurry, post office! Hurry!} It looks to be like a fun, challenging workout and I am definitely in need of a challenge. ;-)

My water intake is way up {as evidenced by the need to ummm..."get up" in the middle of the night. Oops!} and I successfully avoided all forms of Valentine's Day bliss temptations. :o) Not to say that my nutrition has improved to any real degree {because it hasn't} but no chocolate or cupcakes during Valentine's is HUGE!

How was your Valentine's Day? Did you do anything special? Eat anything scrumptious????

I think this just about covers my check-in this week. Before I go, I wanted to ask you all: with the next Fit Mommy Challenge on the horizon, what sort of prizes would you like to see this time? {And don't say "doughnuts" even though that's something I would say because that's totally cheating... Hee hee}

Fit Mommy Friday

Good morning, ladies!! Sorry I'm so late posting this. I'm running around like a chicken {not with its head cut off, because that's just gross...} trying to get this family of mine ready to GO! My youngest {as you may have read numerous times because I'm "that" mom...Ha!} is performing in Cinderella a whopping 6 more times (twice a day, through Sunday), and we've decided to save our gas and sanity by staying in a hotel this weekend. Not only that, but my in-laws are flying in from CA to attend Saturday evening's show! Woohoo!!! So that's my excuse for the delay with getting this post out. Sorry! :o[

I've had slightly better progress this week in the workout department. The new block scheduling is working out pretty well; I just have to factor in a bit more time to get in a decent workout. None of this 30 minute stuff! Ugh. I would much rather have a solid 60-90 minutes like I previously mentioned. However, with all these Cinderella performances, homeschooling, and work projects---it just isn't possible. But when the clock strikes midnight on the ballet (ha ha! Get it???), then I'll have more time, I'm sure of it.

Okay, I really, really have to get going now. Sorry this is so short! I hope everyone's having a fantastic week!!!!!!! ((Hugs to you all!!))

Fit Mommy Friday

Boy oh boy, what a week! Not only did I make zero progress toward my goals {for the 2nd week in a row. Or is it the 3rd?}, but I've been fighting a cold bug as well. My voice keeps going in and out, which pleases my children far more than it should {ahem}, and I could really do without the headache that seems to have taken up permanent residence in my noggin. However, I will say that despite being busy--it's a "happy" kind of busy because....

Cinderella opens tonight at Pacific Northwest Ballet and I've got one of {okay, THE} cutest little "pumpkin" up on that stage, ever!!! :)

We've had back-to-back rehearsals on top of class all week long; last night's dress rehearsal was amazing but it didn't let out until 10pm. {Ditto tonight's performance. *Yawn*} Throw that on top of having to wake up at 4:45am all week, and you've got a recipe for caffeine overload! ;-) As I've previously mentioned, she has 11 performances in all, sometimes 2 per day on top of regular class. Considering the cost of gas these days, this should create a major budget crisis. {Gulp}

My workouts--aside from walking all over town--have been non-existent. Wait. I take that back. I did do a few sets of squats and push-ups sporadically, which hopefully counts for something. {Hee hee} But beyond that--nope!

Eating healthy? What's that? To appease my growing sense of failure, I snarfed down a protein bar on Wednesday while I waited 5 hrs for Abby to get out of rehearsal. {Five.whole.hours!} Granted, it's not the ideal source of nutrition but it sure was tasty and it perked me up a bit. :)

This coming week, I want to start "block scheduling" to see if that helps keep me on track. My goal is to carve out 1 hr each morning for exercise, followed by 1-3 hr. blocks for work, reviews, homeschooling, housework...you get the idea.

So how has your week been? Do you have a workout schedule or is this something you need to work on, too?

Fit Mommy Friday

alt

The following word sums up my week....Blah! I could hardly drag myself out of bed in the mornings, much less exercise with any sort of vigor and vitality. But I did manage to get decent walks in (my usual) as well as a few short jogs and full-out sprints (as in, "Oh crap! There's the bus!"). It's been a very stressful week around here and I just haven't felt like doing much of anything except the bare minimum.

Not a good way to be, nor is it a valid excuse.

Oh, and my plans for trying to get some more sleep? Didn't happen. In fact, I got even less than before. {That's what happens when you mull over everything in your head for the umpteenth time when it's well past 3am. *Yawn*}

I've really got to get my act together before I end up eating my way through a box of Hostess jelly donuts and a king size package of Reese's peanut butter cups just to stay awake! {I kid...I kid...} :) Can you imagine what would happen to my hips if I ate all that? Not to mention the fact that my face would break out worse than a teenager's. LOL

So in summary; this week was clearly not my best. I've got to find a better way of organizing my time to get everything done, including workouts. Once I get that squared away, I can focus on sleeping better--or rather, getting more sleep each night. As it stands now, there's just too much to do in the evenings because I can't get it all done during the day. {I'm whining, aren't I?}

And yet, here's something that's really odd---my jeans are looser around my hips and thighs! Isn't that strange? Funny how I tend to lose weight when I eat horribly or don't workout. And yet if I get the flu, I manage to *gain* 3-5 lbs. {How does that work?!}

Fit Mommy Friday

alt

Happy Friday, everyone!

Well, okay. So it's not technically Friday at the time of this posting. Well, I suppose if you're located in the EST, then it *is* Friday. :) But I digress...! It's time for this week's Fit Mommy check-in so let's get to it, shall we?

Right off the bat, I'll admit to you all that I have not been very diligent in regard to my nutrition this week. Sure, I ate several bowls of Raisin Bran (Mmm...fiber) and I think tuna fish sandwiches are good (and I do make them with cholesterol free mayo), but beyond that? It wasn't pretty.

I didn't indulge in junk food or anything like that. But I wasn't exactly reaching for the greens like I should've been, either. In fact, I've only been reaching for that which is quick and requires little preparation. With all the running around between Cinderella rehearsals, regular ballet classes and taekwondo lessons, plus keeping up with work assignments...Sigh. It was so much easier to reach for something I didn't have to actually cook up or clean/wash first. Or go to the store and buy because I didn't have it right there in front of me. (Hence, the multiple bowls of Raisin Bran.)

I've scaled back my workouts from 90-120 mins to 60-90 mins. This isn't because I feel lazy or anything, it's because I don't have a full 2 hrs to myself. At least, not without waking up earlier (and I already feel 5:30am is plenty early enough!), going to bed later (can't do that--I'm up working 'til 11-11:30pm as it is), or better managing my time during the day....

Okay, now this I could probably work with, I admit. I probably could have the children take on more responsibilities around the house during the day and get them to work more independently on their school work. But even then, I'm not sure where I'd squeeze in 2 hrs of uninterrupted sweat time in between 3 home jobs, cleaning and errands. {You know, I should just accept the fact that it's not gonna happen. LOL!}

So my plans for this week are to continue my daily workouts for as long as possible and *hopefully* cram a few more Zzz's into my nights. Those goals don't sound too terribly stretching, and yet just looking at them makes me kinda cringe on the inside. Just a little. {More sleep? Seriously? Like I have time for that.}

What about you???

Fit Mommy Friday

alt

It's Friday and you know what that means....it's time for the Fit Mommies to check in! :o) So how was everyone's week? Are you able to keep your momentum going? Or have you cut back just a bit now that the Challenge is over?

Before I delve into my week, I wanted to mention a new little "perk" that some of you many not be aware of just yet.

As you may recall, Rachel Hamrick wrote an awesome guest post for us last week detailing 10 steps to making your fitness goals a reality. Well, as a new member of the Fit Mommy community, Rachel has graciously offered to answer any questions we may have about fitness--all through the Fit Mommy Yahoo Group. (If you're not yet a member of the group, send me an email at denise opper (all one word) at gmail dot com and I'll send you an invite.)

Okay! Onto my check in!

Now, as one of you so sweetly pointed out, I managed to sort {cough} escape writing my own check in last week. Was that deliberate? No. I just got all caught up in our awesome guest posts that I didn't stop to think about yours truly. {Hee hee} But there's no excuse this week, now is there??? :)

So! Monday started out really well. I completed a 45 minute Firm tape {Maximum Body Sculpting} and then rode my recumbent bike for another 45 minutes. Feeling at odds with "only" having exercised for 90 minutes {yes, I'm insane and I know it}, I did 30 mins worth of reps later that evening {squats, leg lifts, lunges, crunches in various directions, and jogging in place}. I did this again on Tuesday and Wednesday. Yesterday, I didn't do a single thing less walking all over town, catching buses to/from appointments and what-not. Today--once I'm done with this post--I'll do it again; one workout video plus 45 mins on the bike.

I'm just one of those people that easily loses momentum, so in order to combat that I literally push myself harder to fight through those "I don't wanna" feelings. So far, it's working well. :o)

Nutritionally speaking...eh. Not so good. I definitely need to get more produce into the house. I've been eating a lot of egg/turkey sandwiches on a bagel or wheat bread. {Funny how longer workouts make you feel ravenous!} Like 3 a day! And my water intake is waaaaay up. I've cut back on the chai to where I only had my first cup in *weeks* two days ago, and been drinking a lot of herbal tea. {So yummy!}

My plans for this week are to:
  1. Eat more veggies!
  2. Keep the 90-120 minute workouts going
  3. Drink more water
  4. Maybe...just maybe...get more sleep. :)
Okay, now it's your turn! {Oh, and don't forget to send me your requests to join the Fit Mommy Yahoo Group if you're not yet a member.}

Fit Mommy Friday ~ Our Winner & A Guest Blogger

******************

When Denise asked me to write up a "How I Did It" post, I laughed out loud when I read her email! It just seemed odd to me to have somebody asking what I did to lose weight. But I did lose 17 pounds and I have changed my attitude about food, so I guess I have something to share. lol

I started the Challenge knowing that I couldn't restrict my food because I was anorexic in high school. Restricting my food has always led me down the 'stop eating to lose weight' road and I know that that is not the road God wants me walking down. I have tried diets that require weighing food and cutting out certain food groups and they all had the same results. I stopped eating all together.

Not this time. I knew that something would have to be different with my eating but also my attitude. I decided that I wouldn't make a No List, but have a limit on How Much. I also decided to view food as a means to an end. The end being energy to live and to take care of my family. The ultimate end being my health.

With that in mind, I approached each meal with the thought of only eating what I needed for fuel, listening to my body for signs that it was full. I ate a lot less than I thought I needed and had always eaten. My serving sizes went down drastically. I also upped my water intake to around 72 oz a day. That helped my body be able to get rid of extra water weight and helped control my eating. I felt fuller therefore I didn't gorge at meal times.

Sleep was another biggie for me. I am a night owl by nature but when I would stay up late, I noticed that the next day I would snack a ton more. My body was craving energy from rest and I was trying to get it from mindless eating. When I went to bed at a decent hour and slept for more than 6-7 hours a night, I didn't crave the fattening and sugary snacks as much.

Exercise was also a big part of it. I know, I know no one wants to hear that. I would so love for the weight to fall off without me having to get up off the couch and move; but it won't! I started with doing 30-45 minutes a day, five days a week with the Wii and would sometimes take a 2 mile walk around our neighborhood. I do not like waking up early in the morning but when I do I actually feel better. Honest! It also helped to get the kids involved and working out with me. I worked harder if they were watching! lol The key was to move my body. Dance around while cleaning, walk up the stairs extra slowly and squeeze muscles while doing it, park farther away and walk, stop sitting around watching t.v. or playing on the computer. Ouch! That one really hurt. Not just one thing, but all of them adding up together are giving me the results I want.

The biggest change for me was my attitude. I stopped looking at myself and thinking/saying negative things and started getting realistic. I admitted to being overweight and seeing the things I needed to work on. I would think the negative, "I am so fat" and instead would say, "I am overweight, but I am working on it." I stopped focusing on the bulges and bumps and focused on the effort and changes I was making. I accepted me the way I was and then made changes based on the results I wanted. It's an every minute kind of thing!

I have a long way to go but the change in my attitude towards food is a lasting and permanent thing. I do not need it to make me feel better or to cheer me up. I need it for fuel.

{Note: The second picture was taken this morning after I was able to fit into a pair of jeans that I hadn't been able to before. AND they were even baggy around the waist and butt! It's not a great pic but I had to have a pic in those jeans. lol"}

Awesome post--and congratulations once again, Renita! {{Hugs}} You're an inspiration!

Now it's time to introduce our Guest Blogger and new Fit Mommy Team Member. Her name is Rachel Hamrick and she's a fitness coach and host of "Fitting in Time for Fitness" on MomTV. Here are her tips for making the most of your New Year's Fitness Resolutions!

Making Your Fitness Resolutions a Reality: 10 Simple Steps to Get Started
By Rachel Hamrick
We’ve all been there.. made the resolution to start getting fit.. maybe even bought DVDs from a late night infomercial or desperately dug though your wallet looking for the unused gym card.. but NOW WHAT? The question I get most often is how do I get started? How do I actually make my resolution a reality and save myself from making the same resolution again next year? Seems simple, right.. but even the mere thought of it often stops people in their tracks and sends them straight back to the couch. :) So, I decided to break it down into 10 simple steps that will help you get started on the path to health and fitness.

Step 1: Get real with yourself about your priorities

Before you can even decide what your goals are let alone do anything to achieve them, you have to determine your priorities—and you need to be brutally honest. My priorities are family/friendships, health, career. So, everything I do, including my workouts has to align with those priorities. That’s why I get up at 5:30am to workout despite the fact that I have a hate/hate relationship with the alarm clock. It’s the only time that doesn’t interfere with my family time but keeps me on track toward my fitness goals. Life and good health are about choices—not always easy ones—but getting your priorities straight helps make it easier.

Step 2: Determine your goals and WRITE THEM DOWN

My rule of thumb for workouts and life is everything starts with writing down your goals. Do you want to lose weight? How much in what time period? Do you want to tone up? Build muscle? Tighten up your mid-section? Whatever your goals are WRITE THEM DOWN! I have read a ton and learned a lot about goal setting so if you need help let me know. A great resource… http://www.briantracy.com

Step 3: Find the right workout

Once you have clearly defined your goals, you can pick the best program. There are all sorts of home workouts out there from intense cardio, to weight lifting to yoga and everything in between. It is possible to find a workout that you will like and that will get you results!

Step 4: Get your mind in the right place

In my opinion, this is the most important step AND the one almost everyone skips over. If you don’t start speaking to yourself in a positive, motivating way and STOP listening to that little voice telling you “You can’t” or “You’re too tired” then you will never successfully meet your goals. Learning how to speak to myself like I am the coach of my own team has made an enormous difference in my health and fitness. My favorite mentor and motivator on this topic (and many others) is Chalene Johnson. Do yourself a favor and get her Car Smarts series.. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Step 5: Create the right environment

Having the right environment to work out in, especially at home, is important. The good news is that with most home workout programs you don’t need much. Here are my top tips: (none of these are essential just optimal.. i.e. you cannot use NOT having one as an excuse for not exercising ;)

1. Find a space with enough room to move that can be closed off from the rest of the house;

2. Get the right equipment: Most programs let you know what equipment you will need in terms of weights, mats, bands, etc. But I think it is equally important to have the right shoes and comfortable workout clothes.

3. Get a sign that says “workout in progress” or “Do not Disturb” and put it on the door before you start each day (my sign says “want to workout with me.. come on in.. if not, I’m busy”)

Step 6: Get the right tools

Information is power, so why not arm yourself with the best possible tools to help you succeed. For me that means a food journal (a phone app, a notebook or anything else that is easy for you) and some device to monitor your calorie output. I use the BodyBugg because I think it’s the most accurate and effective device on the market, but there are others out there as well.

Step 7: Find an accountability partner(s)

Ok.. we need to channel the memories of 1st grade field trips.. the buddy system.. it worked then and it works with fitness! Getting an accountability partner who will actually hold you accountable (i.e. won’t be mean but won’t let you off the hook either) is an important component of weight loss. Let’s face it—we are much more likely to let ourselves down than someone else.. right? If you want tips on how to choose a good and effective accountability partner let me know!

Step 8: Schedule your workouts

This step is simple but also overlooked… schedule your workouts like you do your appointments. Yes, I mean take a calendar and write down (on your phone, your fridge, wherever) what workout you will do each day (even if it’s a rest day write REST). I know, I know most at home workout programs come with a calendar but I am a big believer in scheduling your workouts anyway… more accountability!

Step 9: Design a healthy eating plan

I can, have and will write entire blog posts on this subject, but for now the important part is to make sure that you are developing a plan for healthy eating along with your workout program. Weight loss and fitness are mostly about what and how you eat!

Step 10: Decide. Commit. Succeed.

Now you're ready for action. And this is the hardest part because it’s all you! You are the one that needs to press play every day and commit to getting fitter and healthier. You need to do the hard work but you also get to take credit for the results! I love to help keep people accountable so if you need some extra coaching let me know.

My new year’s wish for all of you is to do more, be more and give more! Here’s to a healthier, happier and lighter :) 2011!!

Fit Mommy Friday - Challenge Week 9 {One Week Left!!!}

alt

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock! Can you hear it??? ;-) It's almost time to crown the winner of the first ever Fit Mommy 10 Week Challenge!!!! Woooohoooooo!!!! {I'm really getting excited, can you tell?}

I know how hard you've all been working to reach your fitness goals, and I just wanna say, "Keep it up!" You're down to the wire now, so don't lose momentum. A whole slew of fabulous prizes awaits you! :)

Alrighty! Weekly pep-talk officially out of the way. Now onto this week's check in.

I realize the posting here this week might be a bit scarce with the holiday weekend. And once again I decided to post this just a tad bit early. You know. To beat the Christmas rush. {Ha! Kidding.}

My check in this week is going to be downright pathetic. Why? Because I haven't been able to coordinate my workout schedule with my work scheduleS. The capital "S" is not a typo. I have more than one job going right now, so until I develop a rhythm, things are going to be pathetic in the fitness department. Gee, it's a good thing I'm not eligible for the prize package! I'd lose for sure. :)

{What I really should do is coordinate some time to check out the gym at the hospital. All the employees get free usage and I've heard they've got some rather nice equipment. Wink-wink}

So as I was saying, my workouts have been pathetic. Outside of briskly walking to work {which is exactly 2 miles; takes me 25 minutes}, I haven't clocked in any time on the bike or used a DVD. Not even once!

{Insert profuse weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth here}

And my eating? Oh dear. Let's just say I get free meals by working in the cafeteria, and they're not exactly the healthiest fare. Everything is either cooked in or with oil, with the exception of the lunchmeat sandwiches {which aren't too bad}. And then there's this donut/pastry cabinet. Ahem. Yeah. I've reached into that cabinet twice this week. Not good.

{This is why those folks who are trying to be/stay/get healthy, should never, ever, ever work around food. At least not unhealthy food!}

So like I said...pathetic!

Now, hopefully YOU will have something far better to report. After all, this is your last week to pull out all the stops and make that final PUSH toward the finish line!! :o) I know you can do it.

Fit Mommies, report for duty! ;-)

Fit Mommy Friday - Challenge Week 8

alt
Can you believe there are only 2 weeks left in our fitness challenge?! I seriously did a double-take when I glanced at the calendar just now. It's amazing how fast 10 short weeks can fly by!

I want to just take a moment right now and thank you all for your willing participation in my and Mrs. White's little scheme. ;-)  I am grateful, humbled and honored that you decided to join us, and I'm truly inspired and amazed at how hard you've all worked so far. Even the little accomplishments that you may not think are so awesome or inspirational, are just that. You guys rock!!!!! {Woohoo!!!}

Okay, so onto this week's check in. I'm happy to report that I am feeling a bit better than I have been. {Thank you all for your prayers. They've been felt!} Now that I've started a new job, I'm getting an extra 30 minute walk in {and soon, a 15 minute bike ride} on my work days. Not too shabby. Aaaand {this is truly the best part} I now have free access to the employee gym that I can use every day of the week if I want! Isn't that neat?

I haven't used it yet, but I plan to introduce myself to its fine selection of ellipticals, treadmills and free weights very soon. :-) I'll keep you posted.

Since I wasn't able to shake my funky virus/bug/whatever it was until yesterday, I haven't worked out at all aside from walking. My food intake's been less than savory. Not because I've had junk food or anything, but because I really haven't been eating much. In fact, my stomach wasn't feeling very cooperative at all. Of course now, it seems to be making up for lost time so I'm curious to see what the scale has to say about it. {Ahem}

Well, that's it for me this week. I hope you've all had a wonderful, healthy week filled with lots of healthy food, satisfying workouts, increased energy and an overall "Am I fabulous or what?" attitude. :o)

Remember, we're down to our final two weeks and the winner receives one fantastically amazing prize package!

Oh yes, one last thing. I realize this is being posted on Thursday night instead of Friday morning. This isn't to freak you out and force you to post your check-ins at this very moment. I'm only doing this because I have to work tomorrow and won't have time to post my check in before I head out the door. :o) Okee dokee?

The floor is officially open for comments and link-ups! Have a glorious weekend! :)

Fit Mommy Friday - Challenge Week 7

alt

Well, I'm sorry to say that I don't know what's going on with me, but I've been feeling even more tired than I did last week. Workouts are harder to drag myself through and I've really only been doing the bare minimum, like biking for 15-20 minutes instead of 45-60. And even then, I'm not pushing myself as hard, so I know I'm not burning calories {or at least, not as many} as I normally would. That's disappointing to say the least.

I think perhaps I'm battling off a bug of some nature. My son, Ethan was sick all last week {even had to stay home from church and be quarantined away from Sierra's birthday party} and now Abby's got the sniffles. She and I have started drinking "Emergen-C" {which tastes disgusting, in case you were wondering} in hopes of knocking whatever we've got, out. In addition to feeling headachy and light-headed, I've been a twinge nauseated off 'n on. Not good.

This weekend, Dean's going to see Pink Floyd -The Wall in concert {insert twirly finger here} and the children are going to my Mom's. With the house to myself, I plan on finishing up some projects I've set aside this week and take a nap. That sounds really nice right about now. :o)

So! Back to Fit Mommy!

I've been thinking and I've got a little something extra for the winner of the challenge. Their very own write-up on my blog! Have you seen those in magazines? Those awesome before/after stories? That's kind of what I'm going for here. I'll shine the spotlight on the winner and {if Mrs. White helps me, because I'm a total ditz when it comes to this sort of thing} award a neat little badge to display on their blog. How's that sound?? :o) Leave a comment and tell me what you think about it. And no, photos {aside from a headshot} are not necessary unless you've lost an impressive amount of weight and you totally *want* the whole "before/after" thing. But I'll leave that up to you. ;-)

Well, I'm having a hard time even sitting upright at the moment and on top of everything else, I have to run over to the hospital this morning to finish the rest of my vaccinations/TB test. So with that said, I think I'm going to cut this check-in short. :o(

Hope you're all having a fabulous week and are able to keep the momentum going! We're down to our final THREE WEEKS!!! Woohoo!
